Footsteps and Shadows

I had some time to spend down by the shore tonight and was able to capture this shot just before dark. I was planning on working with my pinhole camera but decided the black and white 120 film wasn't going to capture the scene the way I wanted. So, I went with my main camera and tried to capture the color. It can be seen in the "collection one" gallery. Enjoy.

Happy Halloween!

Wow, it has been a while since I last posted to the site.

I hope you've had a chance to look at my new images from the Alignment Exhibit last summer. They are now posted in the "collection one" gallery on the main page and at danjandl.com/alignment.

Since the alignment show, I have been quite busy with some other projects, but I hope to post some new images here in the near future. I plan on getting out and shooting a lot more in the coming months so check back.

Thanks for reading.

Hello all-

Well, the Alignment exhibit was a huge success; thank you to everyone who came to see it. We had a great opening reception and I got a chance to chat with a lot of people- friends and strangers.

The exhibit has now ended, but all my images from the show are posted on this website. On the main page, there is a large banner on the bottom that will take you to the gallery.

I will also be adding additional new images in the near future as well as redesigning some elements of the website including the slideshows and order page. Please let me know if you come across any glitches while browsing the site.

That's all for now. Check back soon to see some more new photos.

Thanks for visiting,

Dan

Hello Everyone,

I'm happy to inform you that I will be exhibiting a new collection of photography at Washington Galleries starting July 10th.

This will be my first show, and I will be co-exhibiting with friend and fellow-photographer, Travis Melin.

While still exploring Lake Superior-area landscapes, my focus for the new images was to work on alternative perspectives at some of my favorite locations. My lack of recent posts here on the website is due to the fact that I have been saving the new images for the show.

Travis' new work is an astounding look into "nature based micro-worlds." His large-format camera has allowed him to capture the most minute details of these small compositions, and show them on a grand scale.

Please join me at the opening reception on July 10th from 6:00-9:00 p.m. Feel free to pass along this invitation to others who may be interested.

I hope to see you there.

Dan

Since the last post, I have been out doing a bit of shooting. Here are three shots I have taken within the last month. The shot on the top at the left is entitled Ice Cover and Can be found in the Northern MN gallery. The next shot is called "Park Point Trees" and can be found in the Black and White/Sepia gallery. The shot at the bottom is called "Park Point Sunrise" and is also in the Northern MN gallery. Enjoy.

January 20th, 2009

After a long cold week, it finally started to warm up last weekend. I hadn't had much of a chance to take a close look at the ice on Lake Superior yet this season, so I thought this would be a good chance. I headed to the shore just north of Duluth and did a bit of scouting in the early afternoon. All along the shore there were the typical piles of ice that accumulate every year. Different sized pieces seem to group together similar to the way smaller rocks do in the summer. I found a spot with some rather large clear pieces and decided that's where I would shoot. A few hours later, I returned to this spot and set up for the shot. I wanted to get the soft light of the sunset against the blue ice, so a late afternoon shot was necessary. You can find this image in the North Shore gallery.

I took a trip down to the Lester River last night, my second one in a week. I started my hike around 3:45 so I didn't have a whole lot of time, but I knew what I was going to shoot. There was virtually no wind and at that time of day with these colder temperatures, there aren't as many visitors to the river as one would see in the Summer months. This is why the Lester River is one of my favorite places to go once it turns cold.

As I got out of the car, the snow was falling and as I started walking, the sound of my steps seemed amplified due to the dead calm around me. Much of the river is covered with ice by now so the sound of moving water is muffled, adding to the silence. It's quite an experience to walk into the woods a ways and just stop to listen to the silence; it makes the hair on the back of your neck stand on end. For me, it tends to calm me down, slow my breathing, and help me to focus.

I had a handful of locations picked out and I got to work setting up the tripod and framing up the shots. I made a few images at each location and decided to call it a night. By 4:45, it was getting too dark to get the types of shots I was looking for and the muted colors made it difficult to get that "punch". But even with no great shots, its hard to walk away from this type of setting disappointed.

As I was leaving, I decided to make my way over to Brighton Beach to see the calm waters of the Lake. Its not too often that Superior is it ease like it was last night. I looked off to the West, toward downtown and Canal Park, and the light from the city and the setting sun was reflecting on the bottom of the low clouds. I decided to set up the tripod on the beach and try a few frames. After a one minute exposure I got the shot you see above. You can find this image in the "North Shore" gallery and there is also a desktop wallpaper on the "Desktop page.

Well, after two months or so, I am back with a current post. As you can see, I have posted several new images. The latter four of the six images are from my archives and were taken over the course of the last year. The first two images are more recent with both of them being captured within the last month.

The first image in the post, "Jay Cooke at Night," was taken on a trip to Jay Cooke State Park. I had been shooting in the park around sunset for over an hour and had framed up this scene early on. The lighting wasn't quite right at that time, so I decided I would return later and continue onto some other locations. I ended up not getting back to this spot until dark and found that I had forgotten my flashlight. After some contemplation, I decided that I would climb over the rocks, set up my tripod, and get the shot anyway. I started to climb over the steep rocks that line this section of the St. Louis River. As I made my way closer to the water I found myself standing on one of the rock ledges looking down at what I thought was solid soil between the large cracks. It was too dark to see any detail, but there were no reflections to indicate water--I took the leap. I ended up jumping waist-deep into swamp water. I quickly caught myself with my tripod and free hand before I went completely under. I climbed out of the sludgy water with a cut and bleeding hand, sitting in the cold air of mid-October in Minnesota. I decided to continue on across the rocks to get myself closer to the water. I set up my tripod to frame up the shot that I had decided on earlier that night. With the lack of light, it was difficult to see through the viewfinder, but I managed to get the scene I wanted and set my camera to a long shutter speed. This long shutter speed of 30 seconds allows me to capture all of the ambient light in the atmosphere, giving the viewer the impression that the shot was taken earlier in the day. I made two or three photographs and put the camera back in my bag. On the way back to my car, I really took my time making my way across the rocks. I found an extra pair of pants in the trunk and changed in the parking lot before making my way home.

Quiet Sunset

Hello! As you can see, I have posted a new image. It is called "Lake Superior Clouds" and can be found in the North Shore gallery. This particular shot was captured along the North Shore just past Brighton Beach in the late afternoon.

I have also done a bit of work to the website. The gallery has had a bit of a facelift and also undergone some functional updates as well. The navigation has changed a bit as well and will now work on browsers without Flash installed. As for the gallery, I am working on an alternative page to display the images for those of you without Flash.

There are a few more changes to come and things may not be 100%. Let me know if you find anything that needs to be repaired.

Thanks for stopping,

Dan

Quiet Sunset

The locations I have been doing the bulk of my shooting at this summer have been quite limited. Not because I don't want to try new things, but because I keep finding something new no matter how many times I visit one place. This is why I love this part of the world; the rapid changes of mood. On the day I took the photo above, I had decided to break out of my routine, and head to a new location. I started up the shore and arrived at a place I have only visited once or twice. I walked around for a few minutes and got back in the car. It wasn't going to happen. On my way back into Duluth I stopped at the Lester River and took a walk. On my way back to my car, I noticed some clouds over the lake and a near-full moon. I made my way to Brighton and was able to capture this shot. Something new in the same old place once again. The shot is called "Quiet Night" and it can be found in the North Shore gallery.

This one is for Carly, my photo editor in life.

Tischer Creek Rapids     Tischer Creek Throught the Trees

I have been out shooting quite a bit lately but have not decided whether or not I will post much of what I have been capturing. Tischer Creek has been my area of focus for a while and there are two images that I made there recently that I think fit in with my other work on this website. The images are called "Tischer Creek Rapids" and "Tischer Creek Through the Trees." They will also appear in the "North Shore" gallery.

Lake Superior Beach

I was up the North Shore for a couple of days and captured a few more images to add to the site. I was very pleased with the images from the last post (as seen below) so I worked to capture a set of black and white shots to add to the "series". This set is called "Lake Superior Beach" and can be found in the bw/sepia gallery.

I was able to get a wallpaper posted for this series as well as one for the previous set.

Thanks for visiting.

Brighton Beach

I was able to get out and do some shooting one afternoon a while back and decided to go down to the shore. I took my time walking around looking for a spot but it was getting dark fast. I found 3 different areas I liked and made photo at each. The series is called "Brighton Beach Shoreline" and can be found in the bw/sepia gallery. There will be a wallpaper coming soon.

Thanks for stopping by....

End of the StormChester Autumn

I finally got some time to post a shot that I took during the blizzard we had a while back. The shot on the left was taken after things had died down a bit. It can be seen in the North Shore gallery.

The shot in the right was taken last fall. It somehow never got posted to the site. It can be viewed in the Northern Minnesota gallery.

Both are also available as desktop backgrounds.

Shadows from Moonlight

I see it has been over three months since my last post. Time does fly. I am working on getting some more images to post...

A few nights ago, I was able to make a trip down to Brighton Beach just after sunset. There was a full moon and the sky was relatively clear so I decided to see what I could frame up considering the circumstances. The light was hitting a group of trees and park bench quite nicely so I set up my tripod and snapped a few shots. The image you see above is the result. It is called "Shadows from Moon Light" and can be found in the BW/Sepia gallery. There is also a desktop background available.

Thanks for visiting.

Brighton Beach

I took a trip down to Brighton Beach this morning not totally sure what I was going to try and capture. It was  quite cloudy, barely any sunlight coming from the horizon. I tried framing up a few different shots but was not happy with the composition. I walked down the beach a bit further and found a spot where the waves were breaking against the rocks with some great blue clouds in the background. After I got the timing of the waves, it only took one shot to capture this image. It's called "Brighton Beach" and is in the North Shore gallery (second image I believe).

Enjoy,

Dan

(It is also available as a desktop background.)

September 15th, 2007

I have posted five more images taken over the course of the summer.

Sunrise on the Shore        Quiet Sunset

 Sunset on Hartley Pond

Doe in Moonlight     Park Point Trail

From top left, "Sunrise on the Shore" in the North Shore gallery, "Quiet Sunrise" in the Northern Minnesota Gallery, "Sunset on Hartley Pond" Northern Minnesota Gallery, "Doe in Moonlight" Black and White/Sepia Gallery, and "Park Point Trail" Black and White/Sepia Gallery.

All is Calm

This is a new shot captured a few nights ago. This scene is overlooking the Lakewalk toward Canal Park. I like that it captures the blackness of the sky while still retaining the gritty detail of the rocks, wood, and train tracks. It is called "All is Calm" and can be found in the bw/sepia gallery. I have also made a desktop background.

August 13th, 2007

Once again I have tweaked the look of the site. You'll find that everything is in the same place it was and that the main difference is the color scheme and a newly designed opening page. I felt that the interface of the site suffered that last time I did a complete overhaul and that it could be a bit more aesthetically pleasing.

I am also contemplating whether or not to post the news in a blog format. This would allow users to subscribe to the news in RSS feeds for email or readers. It would also allow for comments on news items...we'll see....

Enjoy

Dan

P.S. because of some of the changes I made, some old graphics may still be visible depending on your internet browser settings. Its a good idea to clear your browser's cache. In firefox, this can be done by going to "Tools" > "Clear Private Data." In IE7, it can be done by going to "Tools" > "Delete Browsing History."

July 29, 2007

Beach

I have been working on a series of photos focusing on beaches lately. The three above are the first "official" releases from the series and they can be found in the "Black and White/Sepia" gallery. I have also included a new desktop background featuring these images which can be found as always in the "Desktop" page.

In other news, my portfolio site (danjandl.com/portfolio) has also been updated. This site is a place for me to post some of my other projects that don't fit in with my main area of work that is featured here at danjandl.com. I recently added a gallery of images inspired by pinhole photography. If you're interested, go to danjandl.com/portfolio and click the "series" button. The gallery is called "Something Simple." There is also a link on the main page of this site.

Enjoy,

Dan

UPDATE: I also revamped the desktop backgrounds to make them look a bit more aesthetically pleasing. In addition, I added some new backgrounds and got rid of some old, less popular ones.

July 9, 2007

To the Beach

I added this new photo today called "To the Beach" that can be found in the Black and White/Sepia gallery.

I was looking for a particular shot along the shore last night but the conditions were not favorable. So after walk along the beach I spotted this scene and decided to set up and capture a few frames. I was quite pleased with the results. Hope you like it.

June 25, 2007

(THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED)

Last night after a hot day, I decided to take a walk along the shore. I wandered out onto a small outcropping of rocks and came across this scene. After a four minute exposure, I had captured this image. You can find it in the Black and White/Sepia gallery. Thanks for stopping by.

May 31, 2007

New Site!

I have finally uploaded the new site that I have been working on lately. I have kept with the same basic layout because it seems to work and like they say, "if it's not broke, don't fix it," right?!

I did some tweaking to the overall style, I shrunk the layout to accommodate more browser sizes which eliminated the need for scrolling and I also added faster loading images. Another big addition is a whole new section for those with slower internet connections. The "Got Dial-Up?" link at the bottom of the main page is linked to a stripped-down, faster loading version of the site.

I'm sure there will be some bugs here or there so if while exploring you find something that's just not right, please use the "contact" page to let me know. I hope you enjoy the changes.

Thanks for stopping,

Dan

Touch of Ice   Flower at Last Light

I have added two new photos to the Northern Minnesota gallery. The one on the left was taken at the end of March after a large ice storm. The second was actually taken last summer and lost in the archives. I had set it aside to post it on the site and for some reason never got around to it. It was taken after an afternoon of shooting in Jay Cooke State park and ended up being the best shot of the day. Enjoy.

Dan

March 28, 2007

I added the photo of Mack shown below as a desktop wallpaper on the "Desktop" page.

If anyone has a request for a desktop wallpaper of any of the images on this site or in a different screen resolution, feel free to ask. I've just made wallpapers of some of my favorite images; if there is a photo that isn't on the "desktop" page that you would like to be, send me a message.

Enjoy!

Mack

While back home on  Black Bear Lake, I spent some time hiking around with my camera. It was a cloudy and wet day and the light was being diffused by the clouds. This is generally my favorite type of light to shoot in. Mack (my dog) and I were on our way home when we decided to head down to the floating dock on the pond. He decided to go out and take a look and I was able to capture this shot.

I'm hoping to get some more new material posted in the coming months. I have been keeping busy with a few other projects and haven't been shooting material that fits into this particular website as much as I usually do. Rest assured though, summer is on its way and this area of the great state of Minnesota begs to be photographed during those months. Thanks for taking a look.

Dan

("Mack" is in the Black & White/Sepia gallery.)

Heron at Nightfall

Well, it has been a while since I last posted an update. I have been quite busy lately with various projects, including work on a photo restoration website, and have not been devoting the time I usually do to getting out and shooting. I did however get out several days ago and again this morning, but didn't feel that anything I captured was up to par for the website. Since it has been a while since the last update, I went through the archives and posted this photo I took a year and a half ago of a heron standing in a stream just before dark. I had been out all afternoon and was on my way home when I came by this scene while crossing a bridge. Since it was so dark, I couldn't get a fast enough shutter speed to capture a crisp, sharp image. I also didn't have time to set up my tripod, so I made the best of the situation and went for a more impressionistic approach. For some reason, I have never done anything with this image, but since I have nothing new to post, I decided to use it. I hope you enjoy it.

Dan

(It can be found in the misc. gallery)

November 12, 2006

Beartooth

This is a shot of a valley in the Beartooth Mountain Range in Montana. It was taken on a hunting trip with my dad when I was 15. I used an old film camera to take this shot from the top of a high ridge. This area was recently victim to massive wild fires that destroyed hundreds of square miles of forests including some of the land shown in this shot. I scanned the image this weekend and decided to post it on the website for everyone to use as a desktop background. It's a great area to visit if you ever get the chance.

Enjoy,

Dan

(This image is only available on the "desktop" page. Prints are not available at this time.)

October 29, 2006

Late October Sunrise

After seeing some beautiful sunrises the last couple of days and not having my camera handy, I decided I'd get up extra early today and try my luck at getting a photo of one. After a can of Coke and a 45 minute wait in the dark, I got my chance. Right before the sun started to come over the horizon I was able to capture this image ("Late October Sunrise"). Minutes later the sun had appeared and the brilliant colors in the clouds had faded. Not a bad way to start the day.

(The image can be viewed in the "North Shore" gallery and is also available on the "Desktops" page for your computer wallpaper.)

Foggy Night

After a long rainy day, I decided to take a trip down to Canal Park tonight and see if I could capture an image in the dense fog. I have taken a few photos in the fog down in canal park on several other occasions, but was never quite satisfied with the results. It was another story tonight when I decided to try something a bit different than the usual and  captured the scene in sepia. I think it sets the right mood. I hope you like it.

September 19, 2006

Well, as you may have noticed, there are a few changes taking place on the website. I am working on updating a few different elements of the design, so for now everything may be a little "off." But don't worry, things will be back in full working order very soon.

Thanks,

Dan

Cascade

Wow, it has been a while since my last post. I have been quite busy over the past couple of months and  sadly, have not been able to find time to update the site. First of all, I decided to take up portrait photography this summer after some family and friends asked if I would be willing to do some senior portraits for their soon to be high school graduates. I also switched camera systems this summer to the Canon EOS and have taken some time to better acquaint myself with my new equipment. Now, a few days into August I have started making plans to get out and start shooting nature photos again. So for now, I will leave you with these two shots captured on my vacation a couple of weeks ago in Grand Marais (located in the North Shore gallery). I hope you enjoy them.

Thanks for checking in.

A New Season

I just added two more images since the last post. One of them is "A New Season," which is posted above and in the Northern Minnesota gallery; and the other is a Lake superior panorama entitled "Lake Superior Horizon, which can be found in the North Shore Gallery.

Thats all for now,

Dan

May 31, 2006

I just posted some new shots in the Black/White/Sepia gallery. The three photos are actually a set, a "special edition" type set. The images are of a family of blue jays near Brainerd and are all three done in black and white.

I also have been working on getting some other shots I've taken recently posted here on the site, but I have been quite busy lately. Hopefully there will be some new material soon. Thanks for stopping by.

April 12, 2006

Welcome to Daniel Jandl Photography.

I've been pretty busy lately putting up this new website and haven't had as much time as I would like to get out and shoot. Hopefully now that I have some more time I'll have a chance to post some of what I took over the winter and get out and amass some new material. Thanks for stopping by.
